Option A is the shortest at three blocks yet takes 4.5 minutes, option D takes 3.5 minutes and option C is illegal on westbound-only Cove Avenue. Option B is five blocks but avoids Bay Avenue entirely, at 2.5 minutes.

Options C and D are both legal loops, but C re-enters Harbor Boulevard at Eighth Street, one block from the incident, while D goes an extra block west to Seventh and back, so C is the shorter legal solution.

Its front (address) wall faces west onto Larkin Street, its north wall runs along Pike Avenue, an alley runs along its east wall, and a parking lot abuts its south wall.     Rooms on one side of an interior corridor share the exterior wall on that same side of the building, so a room east of a north-south corridor has its windows in the building's east wall, which here faces the alley. Choosing the west wall confuses the address side of the building with the location of the room, which is the classic error when correlating an interior plan with the exterior the crew sees from the street.

Option A drives the wrong way on a southbound one-way street, option B ends on the southwest corner and option D on the northwest corner.

    Retracing the identical wall you entered on is what guarantees a return to the entry point, but reversing your direction of travel swaps which hand touches that wall: facing north the east wall is on your right, and facing south the same wall is on your left. Option D is physically impossible, and crossing to the west wall abandons the known path back to the stairwell door.

    Left and right are defined from the perspective of the person facing that way, so for someone facing south the right hand is on the west side, exactly the reverse of a person facing north. Because you face north, west lies on your own left, so her right arm points west and appears on your left; this is why a firefighter directing another crew uses compass or scene-referenced terms rather than 'left' and 'right'.

    Observation items test what the scene actually contained, so an option describing a feature that was never mentioned is the answer to a 'which was NOT present' stem. The description lists the propane tank, the red sedan and the hydrant but never a fire escape, and candidates who scan a scene systematically by quadrant, noting access, exposures, occupants and hazards, can rule such an item in or out without guessing.
